Diablos in Sunny San Diego
President's Day Invite, February 13-15, San Diego CA
The men of ASU Ultimate traveled to San Diego, California for the prestigious President's Day Invite, their second trip in as many years.  The Diablos went in with high hopes and lots of momentum, but came out slow and missed out on the championship bracket.  Still, the team rallied and put together a solid tournament record.

ASU faced the USC Ghettobirds in a morning matchup of Pac-10 rivals.  ASU grabbed a break early on a zone D layout by freshman Chad "Trickles" James, but poor intensity and 10,000 drops gave the game away.  Nothing clicked for ASU in the first half and USC took half 7-1.  The second half saw ASU play much more physical on D, but the Diablos had dug too big a hole and fell 13-7 in a forgettable game.

Diablos got back on track, thumping Cal-B 13-4.  Senior Captain Brady "B-Rades" Blake threw four scores and caught one with 0 turnovers, while sophomore Stefen "Tweak" Hillman collected a huge layout D and sophomore captain Kyle "Pope" Popelka made a beautiful horizontal catch in the endzone for a score.

After an awful game against University of San Diego, Diablos finished off the day pounding Cal State Long Beach-B 13-5 and took second in their pool.  The next day ASU faced northwest power Humboldt State, who had dropped down from the elite division after a tough Saturday.  The game was back and forth, with ASU displaying impressive offensive deep game and solid D.  Humboldt took half but the Diablos, the top drinking team in the country, demolished in a team boat race.  The second half played much like the first but Humboldt registered key breaks and took the game on universe point 13-11.  The tournament ended on a high note as ASU destroyed Las Positas College in a boat race before heading back to Tempe.
Rain Can't Cool Hot Diablos
Trouble in Vegas 2010, February 5-7, Las Vegas NV
ASU made its 5th straight trip to Sin City the past weekend for TiV 2010, the largest ultimate tournament IN THE WORLD.  TiV has grown to become a maquee national tournament boasting a field of who's who in the college ultimate scene.  80 of the top men's teams from across the country flew in for the action.  Once again, the weather did not cooperate and made playing conditions very poor.  But high winds, freezing temperatures, and steady rain couldn't stop ASU from going 3-1 and making the championship bracket.

The Diablos had a late 12pm start, but came out shooting against Mad Cow from Utah State University.  ASU spread the disc around the field and forced turnover after turnover with a swarming zone D, taking half 7-3 and eventually sealing the game 13-4.

After a long, cold bye, ASU faced George Washington University "G-Dub".  A 20+ mph crosswind made throwing difficult, and the Diablos zone defense was out in force.  ASU quickly went up a break 2-1 on excellent disc movement by the handlers.  With tensions running high, the two teams would trade points until "Da Professor" Alan Bowers came up with a huge footblock on G-Dub's most...vocal....handler, kicking the disc a full 10 yards back toward their own goal line!  ASU easily converted that break and rolled into half 7-5 on a huck from captain Nigel "Scrabble" Peltier to captain Brady "B-rades" Blake.  Softcap came soon after, and G-Dub put the pressure on, stealing a break back and pushing the score to 7-7.  Scrabble barely missed on several huge upwind hucks, but ASU rallied and punched the disc in 8-7.  ASU zone then came up big, forcing several errant throws before Scrabble connected with Chris"Girlscout" Waltrip for the decisive score.  The win was a total team effort  in a less than spirited game.

The Diablos then had to wait out another long, rainy, cold bye before facing Burn from Virginia Tech in a crossover pool game.  The temperature dropped into the 40s and a steady rain began to fall as the game started under the lights.  Tech jumped to an early 4-1 lead and took half 7-4 on long hucks and easy breaks.  After half the Diablos came storming back, working the disc slowly up the field to undercuts and tight man defense to bring the count to 9-7.  But in the end, Tech took the game in a cap-shortened 12-8 game.

At the end of day 1, the Diablos sat tied for first in their pool with Iowa and in prime position to qualify for the championship bracket.  ASU went back to their hotel at the Tropicana to dry off and grab some rest for their 7:30 am match the next day.

Day 2 pitted ASU against University of Miami (FL) Vice for a spot in the championship bracket. ASU came out on fire despite a steady rain, connecting on deep throw after deep throw. Scrabble found freshman Dan "Screech" Harvey in the endzone multiple times on cross-field hammers, demoralizing Vice and taking half 7-4.  ASU weathered a strong comeback in the second half, but huge layouts by captain Kyle "Pope" Popelka and senior "ET" Tim Camper helped shut the door 13-10.  The Diablos were set to play #17 Iowa in pre-quarters for a spot in the round of 16 when the rains picked up and the tournament director postponed games indefinitely.  Hours of waiting around in hotel rooms followed, with players still fully dressed and ready to go, but word never came and the tournament was cancelled due to field conditions.

Though the tournament was short-lived, ASU recorded their best showing in its five years at Vegas. The Diablos marched their way through the elite 80 team field and finished top 32 alongside the best programs in the country.

Diablos Starts Spring Season at NYF
New Year Fest XXVIII, January 30-31, Scottsdale AZ
ASU Ultimate kicked off their spring season in Scottsdale AZ at New Year Fest XXVIII, the second oldest ultimate tournament in the country.  After an 0-6 showing last season, the 'blos were looking to make a statement and prove they could run with anyone in the valley.  The new look Diablos did just that, grabbing 5th place and running tough against every team they faced.

Saturday the Diablos played four games, going 3-1.  First up was Arizona-B, which ASU handled easily 13-1 with a mix of suffocating zone defense and clutch offensive play.  Next ASU faced the Ngyu'nners, a local Phoenix team, and again easily came away with a 13-2 victory.  Third up was the University of Denver, who had no answer for a swarming ASU zone D, falling 13-3 to ASU.

The last game of the day pitted the undefeated Diablos against undefeated Hammer of the Gods, a Cleveland club team and former NYF champion.  ASU came out very slow, giving up a callahan early.  Hammer was able to break the Diablos zone and several lapses on the goal line put ASU in the hole 7-4 at the half.  The second half saw a whole different team take the field, as ASU rattled off four in a row including a huge layout score from Scrabble on a perfect put from ET.  Scrabble later found ET on several full field hucks, as the two teams traded points until cap was blown, with ASU still clinging to a 13-12 lead.  However, the Diablos were unable to break and Hammer took the game on hard cap 15-13.

On Sunday, ASU faced sectional rival NAU in the quarterfinals.  As usual, the game was intense and extremely close, with the teams trading points all game.  ASU held point and took half 8-7, but as cap was blown ASU found themselves down 12-11.  The Diablos were able to convert the insuing O point to bring the game to universe point 12-12, but NAU broke the mark near the endzone and took the game 13-12 in the closest game of the tournament.  Poor marks and simple offensive mistakes doomed the Devils in the end, though the loss could not put a damper on the overall success of the weekend.
