Diablos Win Irvine Huckfest
October 29-30, Irvine, CA
ASU Ultimate took the field for their first tournament of the fall and rattled off seven straight victories to capture the Irvine Huckfest tournament championship.  The Diablos outscored their opponents by 57 points and their offensive line was not scored on for six games in a row.  ASU's defensive line was equally impressive, with an average of eight break scores per game.

ASU opened as the #2 overall seed and the top seed in their pool.  ASU handled its first game against Pepperdine easily, winning 13-4.  Next was a tough Long Beach squad which had beaten ASU two years running in regionals.  The Diablos came out on fire and took half 7-4 en route to a 13-6 victory.  The last two games of the day were also easily handled by the experienced A squad and
ASU cruised to a 13-2 victory over Redlands and 13-3 victory over Azuza Pacific.

Sunday brought a quarterfinals matchup with Cal Tech, which ASU handled 13-3 without allowing a score the entire second half.  Diablos then got a measure of revenge against Occidental, which had played ASU surprisingly well in the past.  They dismantled Occidental's offense and sophmore Nate Bridges outskied all who tried matched up against him, leading ASU to a 13-6 victory and a berth in the finals.  ASU started the championship against Long Beach with huge d's from freshman Mike Grazzini and rattled off two early breaks to go up 3-1, taking half 7-4.  Long Beach fought back in the second half with three breaks of their own and pushed the score within two at 11-9.  ASU scored on O and broke Long Beach on a floaty pass from senior captain Kyle Popelka to junior standout Zak Semerad to clinch the championship 13-9.

ASU was led by senior captain Chris "Girlscout" Waltrip with 25 assists on the weekend and standout performances from juniors John Safstrom, Mike Hall, and Travis Dunn.  The Diablos beat their opponents by an average of 8.5 points and never trailed in any game.
