So what is Ultimate, anyway?
Built on speed, agility, endurance, and toughness, ultimate is the fastest and most intense club sport offered at the college level. Played on a football field, a team of 7 players advance a disc up the field against the opponent’s defense, passing to teammates to score a goal in the opponent’s endzone.
Wait...Ultimate is a club sport?
You better believe it is. Just like other club sports, we represent ASU at tournaments all over the country. When we’re not traveling, we practice five times a week doing drills, scrimmaging, and conditioning. Our club is one of 700 college ultimate teams across the country that compete for a national championship in the spring.
And here’s something to wrap your brain around: According to the New York Times, ultimate is far and away the fastest growing sport in America. In fact, nationally more people play competitive ultimate than rugby and lacrosse...COMBINED!
But don’t you play barefoot and stuff like that?
Seriously? And no, we play in cleats. Just like football players don’t play in leather helmets anymore, ultimate has come a long long way from its hippie roots. Nowadays, ultimate is hands down the fastest, most athletic sport on grass. The average player sprints over 2 miles in a single game. This ain’t frisbee golf...
Sounds cool...but I’ve never played. What if I suck?
Can’t throw a disc to save your life? It doesn’t matter- if you can run hard and play with intensity, you can contribute from day 1. Believe it or not, throwing is only 10% of the game. Almost all of our current players had never touched a disc before they came to college, and they will all tell you how easy a sport it is to pick up. Whether you've never touched a frisbee before, or you just won junior nationals with your high school- there’s a spot for you. We'll start with the basics, teaching throwing, cutting, and basic offense and defense and go from there.
Whats this VOTS thing all about?
VOTS stands for Valley of the Sun Ultimate, the local Phoenix ultimate league. ASU only allots us fields for two nights a week during the fall, so in order to get everyone more playing time, we ask everyone to sign up for the Fall League in addition to coming to our practices. League takes place on Tuesdays or Thursdays during September and October in local parks around Tempe. It is totally relaxed- a perfect place for new players to learn and get comfortable. All the top players in Phoenix play and games are lots of fun while still being competitive. All returning Diablos players will be playing, so carpooling is no issue. Visit VOTS.org for more info and listen up as August nears- we will be putting registration information up on the ASU Ultimate website.
Why does it burn when I pee?
Umm I don’t know dude you should probably get that checked out.
Are there tryouts?
First of all, EVERYONE is welcome in the fall. A vast majority of our players had never played before coming to college. The fall season is all about learning the sport and having a crazy good time.
ASU Ultimate is split into multiple teams during the spring season, an A team and two B teams. The A team is highly competitive and is aiming to qualify for the USA National Championships this May. Tryouts last during the month of October to give everyone a shot to make the team. Those who do not make the A-Team cut will make up the B teams, a less intense environment that allows new players to develop. The B teams still play in tournaments and travel to awesome places like the A team, just not as much.
Is ultimate coed?
No. ASU has a men’s and a women’s ultimate team. The women’s team is called Caliente. For more info on them, check out their website at www.CalienteUltimate.com
Sweet! Where do I sign up?
We practice Monday and Wednesday nights on the ASU Performance Field from 8:30-11:00pm. Check out the Practice Times page for more info and a map. Also, sign up for our email list to stay in the loop. See the Contact Us page.
